Coal Plant Operating Costs are Rising

Based on data from Austin Energy for the operating and maintenance (O&M) costs of the Fayette Coal Power Project:

  • In the past 11 years, FPP O&M costs rose from $11.8 to $21.4 million (up 81%)
  • In FY2008, FPP O&M was over budget $2.4 million (over budget 12.5%)

Operating and maintenance costs will reasonably rise in the future as new emission control equipment is installed (imposing new O&M requirements that are not currently needed). Future operations of all coal plants in Texas are expected to be more dynamic (more ups and downs in output) which may pose additional O&M requirements.
